About

The Port of Tórshavn

The Port of Tórshavn (Tórshavnar havn) is the largest and busiest of the many harbours dotted throughout the Faroe Islands. As a thriving port with a truly international outlook, Tórshavn offers an unrivalled concentration of quality maritime services and expertise.

Tórshavn has enjoyed success as a base for North Atlantic fishing fleets, a focus for the nation’s container and ro-ro ferry traffic and a growing summer call for cruise ships.

In recent times, a process of consolidation has led to many smaller neighbouring municipalities – Kollafjørður, Nolsøy, Kirkjubøur, Hestur and Koltur – being absorbed into Tórshavn. As a consequence, this municipal enlargement has significantly widened the operating area of Tórshavnar havn, which now includes harbour facilities at Sund and Kollafjørður.

Tórshavn is also the largest port in the Faroe Islands for containerised cargo. Every week, container services link Tórshavn directly with Iceland, Scandinavia, Continental Europe and the UK.

Sund - The base for marine and industrial activities

Sund is the second of three harbours owned and operated by Tórshavnar havn (Tórshavn Port Authority).

Originally constructed by Tórshavnar havn on behalf of the local fishing industry, Sund is now viewed as the ideal location for all kinds of marine, industrial and related activities.

Situated in Kaldbaksfjørður, about 10 km from Tórshavn, well away from residential housing but right alongside the main road between Tórshavn and Vágar Airport, Sund also serves Eysturoy and the North. It is also the location for the Faroe Islands’ biggest power plant.

Sund has a total of 215 metres of quay, with one berth of 150 metres and another of 65 metres. A total of 25,000 square metres of land is available for development alongside the two berths.

Sund is ideal for the kind of activities that are best undertaken well away from Tórshavn.

Kollafjørður - A harbour with space to grow

Located 23 km north of Tórshavn and more or less at the geographical centre of the Faroe Islands, Kollafjørður is the third harbour area controlled directly by Tórshavnar havn (Tórshavn Port Authority).

Kollafjørður has been specifically earmarked by Tórshavnar havn for development, yet this fast-growing harbour area is already home to a range of thriving businesses that together make a major contribution to the local economy. These businesses comprise:

A processing plant for farmed salmon

A cold storage company operating a multifunctional, BIP-approved facility with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes

The world’s largest fish refrigeration plant, specialising in pelagic (top feeding) species.

The level of business undertaken at Kollafjørður is such that the harbour receives regular and direct mainline calls by a leading North Atlantic-based operator. This liner operation is supported by some 3,500 square metres of open space dedicated to container handling, stacking and related activities.
